Others are the product of new and better technology. Some forms of secondary storage have been available for decades.

1. Cloud Computing 

85 percent of businesses store critical information on the cloud. Users can store, access, and send data utilising distant storage systems using cloud storage, a relatively new virtualized storage technology. Businesses are increasingly adopting cloud storage solutions due to advantages such as cheaper costs and increased accessibility. Third-party providers administer and maintain cloud-based storage systems, and data can be kept on-premises (private cloud), in numerous third-party data centres (public cloud), or a combination of the two.  

Businesses may adjust storage capacity up or down based on current demands with cloud storage. Cloud storage also offers a flexible pay-as-you-go strategy, simple accessibility, and increased security. 

2. Magnetic storage devices

 One of the most common forms of secondary storage is magnetic disc drives. The hard disc drive (HDD), the most prevalent type of magnetic disc storage, reads and writes data via a magnetic process.The sectors of the hard disc are used to accomplish read and write operations. Hard drives can be placed within or linked externally by USB or firewire to provide quick data access and retrieval. HDDs are frequently used as backup storage solutions, either on their own or as part of a storage array that provides data redundancy to prevent data loss.

3. Storage devices based on light

A laser reads and writes data on an optical storage device by burning small holes into the reflecting disc as it rotates. The laser passes across the disk's surface, using a light sensor to detect reflections created by the pits, to read data.Pits (no reflection) indicate the binary value zero, whereas reflected light represents the binary value 1.

Long-term storage and backups are best done with optical storage Optical discs have lower capacity than HDDs and the cloud, but their costs have stayed low, making them a viable secondary storage alternative. CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs are examples of optical storage.

4. Memory stick

Flash memory is often referred to as solid-state storage or flash storage. It's a high-speed, electrically programmable memory that stores information using electrical circuits and memory cells. The binary value 1 is represented by a high circuit, whereas the binary value 0 is represented by a low circuit. Before fresh data can be written, all data-containing cells must be deleted. Flash storage is utilised in a broad range of consumer gadgets, including USB flash drives, SD cards, mobile phones, and tablets, as well as enterprise data centre servers, storage, and networking technologies. Solid-state drives, unlike magnetic storage systems, do not have moving parts and are therefore less prone to fail. They work at higher speeds while using less electricity and producing less heat. Solid-state drives are currently slightly more costly than hard disc drives, but they are becoming more inexpensive as technology progresses and demand grows.

5. Hard discs

IBM introduced floppy disc drives, one of the first kinds of secondary storage, in the 1950s, and they remained the major form of secondary storage for decades.  Because they were affordable and portable, they were also the primary means of moving data from one computer to another.Floppy discs were originally 8-inch, but as technology evolved, they were reduced to 5.5-inch, and then to 3.5-inch drives. Floppy disc drives were used to read floppy discs and were ubiquitous in PCs until the mid-1990s, when floppy disc usage began to drop.

Floppy disc drives have mostly become outdated, with the various storage technologies indicated above taking their place.
